Coaching is different from therapy or counselling. A coach will ask you creative, thought provoking questions that allows you to set clear goals and explore ways of overcoming the challenges or obstacles in reaching those goals. With the help of certain skills, tools and techniques, a coach will empower you to arrive at your own answers and choose a course of action to achieve your set goal.
Coaches are likely to be passionate people who are inspired and motivated by making a difference in the lives of others by empowering them.
Some reasons why coaching works:
People feel heard – Stephen R. Covey described it best when he said: “most people don’t listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” In a society where each individual is focussed on themselves it makes it difficult to feel truly heard. During coaching, the coach’s total, undivided attention and focus is on the client, which allows the client to open up and be honest about thoughts and feelings and truly explore their goals in a safe environment.
Builds self-confidence – A coach can be your biggest supporter and motivator. A coach works with the understanding that you can (and will) reach your full potential. By celebrating small victories along the way and with your coach empowering and encouraging you to go further, you build confidence in your ability to reach your goal. Feeling empowered can be a great confidence booster.
Thinking proactively – Coaching allows you the opportunity to proactively ‘chase your dream’ instead of just reacting to whatever life brings your way. Through a coach’s creative and thought provoking questions, you develop your goal clearly and put an action plan in place that’ll help you reach those goal(s).
Guided and structured plan – A coach can help you develop a clear, specific, measurable and practical action plan to reach your goal(s). A coach will ask questions that will prompt you for answers that are descriptive and clear instead of general, ambiguous and judgmental.
Creative thinking towards a solution – A coach will encourage you to ‘think outside the box’ and be creative in finding solutions for challenges, creative ideas for setting up your action plan and creative ways in which to stay on track and remain motivated.
Flexibility – Coaching is a flexible process and you, the client, are in control of that process. You decide what your priorities are, what you’d like to focus on and what goals you’d like to achieve and how you’d like to achieve them.
Honesty – Sometimes it’s easier to open up to a complete stranger than a trusted friend or family member. Coaching is a wonderful opportunity to honestly process your thoughts and feelings, while resting assured that your coach will remain non-judgmental and have your best interest at heart.
Overcoming struggles and dealing with challenges – Even the best laid out plans sometimes get disrupted by obstacles. Your coach can help you honestly and objectively assess the struggle or challenge and encourage you to find a creative way to get back on track. A coach might help you gain a different perspective on the situation and challenge you to overcome a fear that may empower you to overcome the challenge.
Drawing upon your own talents and abilities – You have all the resources you need in order to achieve your goals. A coach can help you identify the right skill, talent or ability to harness in order to reach your goal. Sometimes, during this process, you may even become aware of a useful hidden talent.
Accountability – Your coach will give you homework or exercises, consistently follow up on your progress and keep you accountable for your actions. And if your motivation is lacking, your coach can guide you back on the right track. Your coach will also encourage you to celebrate your progress along the way. This is a great way to build confidence and stay motivated along the journey to your goal.
Improves communication – Coaching heightens your self-awareness and that heightened awareness could improve your communication at home and/or at work. By learning to express your thoughts clearly, you may find that people have a better understanding of what you are trying to communicate and you may find that this in turn improves relationships.
